Honest reviews. Real experiences. Worth your time and money.

The story behind The Selective Traveler

A selective eye, shaped by experience.

My love for food and travel began long before The Selective Traveler existed. Born and raised in California, I grew up looking forward to the occasional day trips my parents would take to Tijuana by Greyhound bus. The night before each trip, I could barely sleep because I was so excited. Every visit meant different scenery, new food, and—of course—Mexican candy.

The Selective Traveler reviewer

Those childhood trips created a curiosity that has stayed with me throughout my life. I am Mexican American, autistic, naturally detail-oriented, and highly selective about how I spend my time and money. My autism is an important part of the way I experience the world. I notice details that other people may overlook, and I care deeply about quality, consistency, comfort, value, and whether an experience lives up to what was promised.

As I have gotten older, I have realized that choosing a restaurant, hotel, or destination is not always a small decision. These experiences can make you happy or leave you frustrated. They can create wonderful memories or disappointing ones. They can feel worth every dollar and every minute—or make you wish you had stayed home.

Looking into a restaurant or hotel beforehand may sometimes feel excessive, but a little research can prevent wasted time, wasted money, and unnecessary disappointment. I learned this after spending far too much on places that were heavily promoted or highly rated but did not live up to the hype. Too many reviews repeat polished talking points without explaining what an experience is actually like.

I wanted something more honest, so I created it.

The Selective Traveler brings together three important parts of my perspective: the critical eye of a clinical auditor, the attention to detail of an autistic traveler, and the practical judgment of someone who is careful with money. I look beyond beautiful photographs and popular opinions. I pay attention to the food, service, cleanliness, comfort, atmosphere, accessibility, pricing, and the small details that ultimately determine whether an experience is truly worthwhile.

I love luxury dining and travel, but I am also realistic. I cannot—and do not—live luxuriously all the time. An expensive experience should justify its price, and I never assume that something is better simply because it costs more. Some of the best meals, hotels, and travel experiences are surprisingly affordable, while some of the most expensive can be the most disappointing.

My goal is to provide thoughtful, detailed, and unfiltered reviews for people who expect more. Whether I am visiting a luxury hotel, trying a celebrated restaurant, discovering a neighborhood favorite, or enjoying an inexpensive local meal, I will tell you what stood out, what fell short, and whether I believe it deserves your time and money.

Selective does not mean impossible to please. It means knowing that your experiences matter—and choosing them carefully.
